Junior Volunteer Program - 2010

Mission Statement

If you enjoy the satisfaction that comes from helping others, you will want to be part of St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center’s Junior Volunteer summer program. The Junior Volunteer Summer Program at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center is for teens to explore careers in healthcare and to provide valuable service to the Medical Center’s staff and patients. This popular program is a great way to learn new skills, develop new interests, and meet new people. The Junior Volunteer program offers teens an opportunity to work in a medical center setting to learn about the variety of careers within healthcare.

Junior Volunteers provide service in: Same Day Surgery, Transportation, IT, Pediatrics and the Business Office, to name just a few. They can been seen doing various tasks around the medical center, including helping in the clinics, transporting patients, answering phones at the information desk, assisting with miscellaneous office duties, delivering flowers, working with food and nutrition services, and working with environmental services. This experience offers the opportunity for teens to gain self-confidence by making a difference in people’s lives.

Program Requirements

Junior Volunteers must be available and attend Information and Parent Night (for new volunteers only), an Interview and Orientation. Juniors should be age 13 prior to May 31st, 2010, and must be available to volunteer 6 weeks of the 8-week program beginning the week of June 7th, 2010. We are looking for mature young adults who are responsible, interested in learning, and able to work in a clinical or clerical setting independently.

Junior Volunteer Interviews

Interviews are Monday, April 12th through Friday April 23rd, 2010. Both new and returning junior volunteers must interview. Interviews will be scheduled during the late afternoons, early evenings, and on a Saturday. Your interview is part of our selection process. Remember, this is the first impression you will make on our staff, so please arrive on time and dress appropriately. We ask questions regarding past experiences, summer vacation scheduling, school and academics, etc. Interviews typically last 30 minutes.

New volunteers will schedule their interview at the Information and Parent Night. Returning volunteers may schedule their interview by calling 1-877-602-4111.

The Program

The program begins the week of June 7th, 2010. Students should have set arrangements regarding parent / guardian drop off and pick up, carpooling, etc. Juniors should arrive appropriately dressed and ready to volunteer when they arrive. There will be opportunities to participate in other activities as a Junior Volunteer (i.e. Care Camp, tours, etc.).

Scheduling

Students are placed in service areas based on the needs of the hospital, therefore students need to be flexible regarding placement and open to new learning experiences in all areas of the facility. Students working in pediatrics must be at least 16 years old. Minimum requirement for the program is one day per week for 6 weeks out of the 8-week program, for approximately 4 hours per day. Typically we recommend 1 day per week for our New Junior Volunteers and 1-2 days per week for our Returning Junior Volunteers. Parents need to arrange pick up and drop off for students immediately prior to and after volunteering.
