Huger Mercy Living Center
The Huger Mercy Living Center is a 48-bed, state-of-the-art innovative dementia care program in a homelike setting with around-the-clock care. The Center--a licensed care assisted living center fully accredited by JCAHO -- offers assisted living while respecting the inherent value and worth of each person. Huger is a non-denominational facility
operated by Catholic Healthcare West/Arizona.
Staffing: All caregivers are Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA's). In addition, all caregivers are also trained and certified in accordance with ADHS regulations specifically for Dementia/Alzheimer care are assigned to each cottage around the clock. Staffing ratio is one to six, with one to twelve on third shift. A medical director oversees overall care of each resident. A Nurse Practitioner sees residents on an as needed basis and is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A full-time RN oversees clinical aspects of all residents care. A fulltime manager coordinates daily operations of the facility.
Activities/Services:
This restraint-free environment provides activities from the beginning waking hours to bedtime. All ADL's, exercise, crafts, spirituality programs, art, music, baking, sweeping, gardening, and eating are structured activities. Higher functioning residents participate in off-campus outings, such as going to the park or the ice cream parlor. Twenty-four hour supervision with activities of daily living is provided. Three meals, restaurant-style, are provided daily. Distribution of medication is provided by a specially trained caregiver. Families may visit any time. Family Support Groups are conducted monthly.
Therapeutic Services: Additional community resources are available. Homecare, hospice, mobile X-ray and lab, and podiatrist services are accessible on an as needed basis through the primary care physician.
Building Description: Inviting walkways connect the main building with four attractive cottages that house up to 12 residents each. The seven acres of grounds are beautifully landscaped. Attractive amenities such as a beautiful chapel, fountain, gazebo, and garden benches encourage residents to roam at will in safety. Each of the four cottages have a large homelike living room, dining room, kitchen, walk in shower, two bathrooms. and whirlpool tub. There are eight private bedrooms and two semi-private rooms per cottage. A large conference room in the administration building is available for activities or special family gatherings.

The Huger Mercy Living Center has designed its program to focus on risk reduction. wellness, and therapeutic activities that help keep memory, speech, and basic living skills functional as long as possible. The St. Joseph's/Sun Health Geriatric Fellowship Program provides the continuum of care with monthly on-site rounds. Implementation of the Mercy Philosophy is focused on quality of life for each resident, with emphasis on compassion and care for the resident and their family. The residential setting is a fully secured gated property with emphasis on the social model and specific dementia care.
