High School Teacher Workshop Program

Purpose

The High School Teacher Workshop Program gives teachers the opportunity to:
·  Learn the latest scientific technology
·  Receive assistance in introducing such techniques to students
·  Participate in continuing education

A Hands-On Experience

The program provides teachers with "hands-on" laboratory experience in techniques and teaching materials to assist them in bringing these techniques into the classroom. The workshops focus on a variety of topics including:

·  Plasmid mapping
·  Ligation
·  Restriction enzyme analysis
·  Bacterial transfection
·  Gel Electrophoresis
·  Polymerase chain reaction / DNA finger-printing
·  Protein purification
·  Other techniques used in modern scientific research

Equipment Loan Program

Advanced technology often requires equipment not readily available to high schools. Our program offers an equipment loan program that will allow teachers, who have completed an approved workshop, to borrow equipment on a short-term basis. This allows them to add "hands-on" biotechnology to their classroom curriculum.

Dr. Adrienne C. Scheck and the faculty and staff of Neurology Research at the Barrow Neurological Institute, administer the Teacher Workshop Program as part of the Scientific Enrichment Program for Students.
