Lymphedema

Lymphedema is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tissue that causes swelling in the extremities and/or torso. It can develop when the lymphatic vessels are absent, underdeveloped or obstructed and are unable to reabsorb and transport fluid.

Lymphedema may begin with an unexplained swelling of the arm or leg. Your limb may feel full, heavy, or tight. If left untreated, the swelling may increase and harden the tissue leading to further complications.

Risk Factors

Several conditions can put you at risk for developing lymphedema, including:

  • A pre-existing condition at birth where lymphatic vessels are absent or underdeveloped
  • Following surgical removal of a tumor and adjacent lymph nodes and vessels
  • Following radiation, infection, or trauma when your lymphatic system has already been compromised

Treatment

An effective treatment approach is Combined Decongestive Therapy, which includes:

  • Manual Lymph Drainage – a gentle, rhythmic massage-like movement, performed with precision by a certified therapist
  • Bandaging and compression garments
  • Skin care
  • Exercises

St. Joseph’s has a specially trained therapist who is an expert at combined decongestive therapy to help reduce lymphedema.
