Adult Congenital Heart Program

With recent advances in medical and surgical therapy, there are now more adults living with congenital heart disease than children born with congenital heart disease. Many of these adults require life-long surgical follow-up and may require surgery to improve quality of life and survival. Surgical treatment for these individuals requires a comprehensive team that is experienced in both pediatric and adult care.

The Scott and Laura Eller Congenital Heart Center at St. Joseph's is one of the few centers in North America to provide comprehensive care for adults living with congenital heart disease. All therapies are available within the context of a medical center that provides comprehensive pediatric and adult care. Transition of care occurs in a seamless and coordinated manner in this setting. Our surgeons utilize the latest technologies and therapies available. Surgical procedures include:

  • Aortic arch reconstruction
  • Complex valve repair
  • Double switch procedure
  • Ebstein’s anomaly repair
  • Fontan revision with MAZE procedure
  • Mustard and Senning revisions
  • Pulmonary valve replacement
  • Tricuspid valve repair and replacement

Evaluation and treatment are available for a full range of repaired and un-repaired congenital defects, including:

  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Single ventricle physiology
  • Transposition of the great arteries
  • Atrial and ventricular septal defects
  • Congenital valve defects
  • AV canal
  • Coarctation of the aorta
  • Truncus arteriosus

Philosophy of Care

We consider our patients and their referring physicians a part of the healthcare team, and we strive to maintain open communication throughout the continuum of care. We offer one-time consultation, ongoing collaborative care with our patients’ primary cardiology team, or assume the primary cardiovascular care role—according to the wishes of patients or their providers. We are happy to see patients by self-referral or by referral from a physician or other healthcare provider.
