Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment Program

The Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment Program at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at St. Joseph's provides education, counseling and genetic testing for hereditary cancer conditions. Hereditary cancers can include breast, ovarian, colon, pancreatic, prostate, or melanoma, as well as others.

You or your physician may make a referral when there is a personal or family history of:

  • Cancer at an earlier age than expected for that type of cancer.
  • An individual with more than one cancer or with bilateral cancer.
  • Many close relatives with the same type of cancer, on the same side of the family.
  • Rare cancers in the family or male breast cancer.
  • Cancer in an individual with another genetic condition or birth defect.
  • Cancer in individuals with Ashkenazi Jewish / Eastern European ancestry.

A Board Certified Genetic Counselor trained in cancer risk assessment will:

  • Collect detailed family history for both maternal and paternal sides of your family.
  • Review medical records of personal and/or family cancers.
  • Assess your individual cancer risk.
  • Discuss your options for surveillance, lifestyle changes, risk reduction, & genetic testing.
  • Explain insurance & employment issues.
  • Arrange testing if desired & indicated.
  • Help you to understand the meaning of test results for you & other family members.
  • Provide follow-up counseling for disclosure of test results.
  • Refer you to other health care providers for management.
  • Maintain confidentiality as required by HIPAA.
