St. Joseph's Cancer Registry

Cancer Registry at St. Joseph's Cancer Center

The Cancer Registry is a vital component of St. Joseph's Cancer Center. The cancer registry is designed to collect detailed information on all newly diagnosed cancer cases and benign neurological tumors. To assure that the information is "high quality", the cancer registry collects data following national standards and requirements so that physicians and researchers can use the data to measure cancer care quality, support cancer control activities, and for clinical surveillance activities that monitor treatment patterns and outcomes.

As required by Arizona State Statute §36-133, the cancer registry at St. Joe's must submit all newly diagnosed cancer cases and benign neurological brain and spinal cord tumors to the Arizona State Cancer Registry. Confidentiality is of the utmost importance as this process is in compliance with HIPAA rules and regulations.

Since 1994, St. Joseph's Cancer Center has achieved approval from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) at the American College of Surgeons with "Commendation Status" in 2006. CoC approval is nationally recognized by organizations such as the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, American Cancer Society, Aetna, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, National Quality Forum, and the National Cancer Institute as having established performance measures for the provision of high-quality cancer care.

Compliance with the CoC standards ensures:

  • Comprehensive care, including a complete range of state-of-the-art services and equipment.
  • A team approach to coordinate the best available treatment options.
  • Information about ongoing cancer clinical trials and new treatment options.
  • Access to prevention and early detection programs, cancer education and support services.
  • A cancer registry that offers lifelong patient follow-up.
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvements in cancer care
  • Quality care, close to home.
