Located in the heart of Phoenix, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center is a 690-bed not-for-profit hospital that provides a wide range of health, social and support services with special advocacy for the poor and undeserved. Founded in 1895 by the Sisters of Mercy, it was the first hospital in the Phoenix area. St. Joseph's is recognized for its quality patient care, medical education and research. The hospital includes the inter-nationally known Barrow Neurological Institute®, St. Joseph's Children's Health Center (CHC), Heart & Lung Institute and the only Level I Trauma Center in Arizona verified by the American College of Surgeons.

The CHC is committed to preventing, diagnosing and treating the most complex childhood diseases, injuries and conditions in a compassionate and interdisciplinary setting. The hospital is an industry leader in pediatric care and has made car- in for the needs of children a priority for more than a century. From minor injuries to major surgeries, the CHC, which is the second-largest pediatric facility in the region, offers a full range of services, including trauma care, newborn and pediatric intensive care. The CHC also collaborates with Barrow to provide a myriad of pediatric neurological services and HLI for cardiac services.

The CHC is devoted to community, and national and international issues related to children’s health. Community Education

• Bootcamp for New Dads - This one-day class gives expectant fathers the opportunity to learn the ropes of fatherhood from veteran dads. The class covers caring for the baby, helping mom and dealing with the emotions, fears and challenges of becoming a new family.
• Childbirth Education - The CHC offers a complete series of programs and services designed to prepare parents for a memorable birthing experience and for the care of their baby. Topics include childbirth education, breastfeeding and birthing facility tours.
• Children Are Priceless Passengers - When properly installed and used, child safety seats greatly reduce the risk of injury for infants, toddlers and young children. Yet, 90 percent of seats are improperly installed. This bilingual class teaches participants how to properly install a child safety seat. It is geared toward expectant and experienced parents as well as other caregivers, and is a collaborative effort between St. Joseph's and the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
• Babysitting Training - This class helps young people prepare for their career as babysitters. Attendees learn how to properly care for infants and children, including safety and accident prevention, emergency decision-making, working well with parents, activity planning and CPR and First Aid. Upon completion, participants receive an American Safety and Health Institute Card and Certificate, as well as useful materials and an activity bag. This is a collaborative effort with the United Phoenix Firefighters Association.
