04/01/2010 Young Valley Woman to Celebrate Easter with a New Set of Lungs and a New Life
A 26-year-old Valley woman is celebrating a "rebirth" this Easter after receiving a double lung transplant at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. Before her lung transplant, Geneva Prendergast was on oxygen and her lungs were functioning at only 20 percent. She was declining rapidly, could no longer work and was worried she might never enjoy the wedding she had planned. Now, she is breathing on her own, her lungs are functioning at 108 percent and she is looking forward to marrying her fiancé, Marc Badalucco.

St. Joseph's Lung Transplant Program Receives CMS Accreditation
The Valley's only lung transplant program has received accreditation from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), giving St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center the "green light" to treat Medicare patients in need of lung transplants.

03/03/2009 St. Joseph's Performs the Valley's First Pediatric Lung Transplant Seventeen-year-old
Daniel Sloan of Mesa now has the opportunity to attend college and live into adulthood after receiving a lung transplant at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. Daniel is the first pediatric patient to receive a lung transplant in the Valley. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at three months of age, Daniel has spent his entire life undergoing treatments that included numerous surgeries and medications, respiratory therapy three times a day, and relied on oxygen to breathe. Before his surgery, Daniel’s lungs were at 25 percent capacity, he was given 18 months to live and weighed only 86 pounds. Now, Daniel is breathing on his own and is quickly gaining weight.

New Addition will Expand St. Joseph's Heart and Lung Program
St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center is expanding its Thoracic Surgery Program with the arrival of Jasmine Huang, MD. Dr. Huang serves as the assistant director of the Esophageal Disease Program and assistant surgical director of the Lung Transplant Program at St. Joseph's Center for Thoracic Disease.

St. Joseph's Participating in Clinical Study to Treat Severe Emphysema
The Center for Thoracic Disease and Transplantation at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center is participating in a clinical trial to evaluate a minimally invasive device for the treatment of severe emphysema. Safety and effectiveness data from the IBV® Valve Trial will be submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval to market the device in the United States.

5/14/2008 “13” Proving a Lucky Number for St. Joseph’s Lung Transplantation Program
Not only was the first transplant done on April 13, the program will mark its anniversary with 13 patients who have received new lungs and a second opportunity at life.

St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Northern Arizona University Distance Learning are joining forces to offer a free health lecture, New Techniques for Treating Lung and Esophageal Disease, to residents throughout Arizona.
1/30/2008 St. Joseph’s is Starting the New Year With a New Beat and Breath
St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center will celebrate the new year with the opening of its Heart & Lung Tower. The eight-story tower will meet the needs of the hospital’s growing thoracic surgery, lung transplantation and cardiovascular patients and the multidisciplinary staff who care for them.
4/24/2007 St. Joseph’s Performs the Valley’s First Lung Transplant
Ann Wylie, 61, of Scottsdale became St. Joseph’s and the Valley’s first lung transplant recipient after undergoing a double lung transplant at the hospital.
