Dana Georges Seltzer Bio


Director of Orthopedic Trauma


Dana Seltzer, MD, has been the chairman of the Orthopedic Department since 2004 and the Director of Orthopedic Trauma since 2003 at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. As a physician and orthopedic surgeon, he is board-certified by both the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Seltzer earned his medical degree at the University of Southern California in 1986, and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center in 1991. He subsequently completed fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, followed by an additional fellowship in shoulder surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas, under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Rockwood.

With more than 20 years of experience in orthopedics, Dr. Seltzer's specialties include:

  1. Orthopedic trauma and fracture management
  2. Sports injuries and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, knee and hip, plus
  3. Common and complex shoulder and elbow problems, including shoulder and elbow replacements.

Dr. Seltzer has served as the medical director for numerous professional sports teams, including the Phoenix Coyotes, Phoenix Roadrunners, Phoenix Mustangs, Arizona Thunder, and Phoenix Cobras. He moved to the Valley in 1993 to teach in the Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency Program, where he started as the Chief of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery. He was named the Program Director and Chairman of the orthopedic residency training program at Maricopa Medical Center from 2000-2004. He has served as the president of the Arizona Orthopaedic Society and the American Fracture Association. He is the vice president of the Southwest Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and a previous board member of the Southern Orthopaedic Association. He has presented research and lectured at annual meetings of national organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the Olympic Ski Team Physicians. He has given more than 100 research presentations, written several book chapters, and published numerous scientific articles.
