The adult neurology residency program in Neurology at Barrow Neurological Institute® is a three-year experience that follows one year of Internal Medical internship. Six applicants are selected each year through the Neurology Residency Matching Program. Residents from Neurosurgery, Family Practice, and Internal Medicine join the Neurology service as part of the elective experience.
The first year of training in Neurology (PGY-2) emphasizes the evaluation and management of the patient with rotations in Adult and Consultative Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery and Neurorehabilitation. Residents also attend the Clinics in the first year where they gain experience with patients who have a variety of neurological disorders.
The second year of training (PGY-3) complements the clinical experience of the first year by providing instruction and experiences in the neurosciences. The year is divided into quarters with rotations in Neuropathology, Neurophysiology, and Child Neurology. A formal lecture program covering the areas of neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, and neurophysiology is given annually.
During the third year of training (PGY-4), the neurology resident completes clinical training as Senior Resident for the Clinical Services at Barrow and assumes a greater role in the conference and teaching activities of the program. For the balance of the year, each senior resident can choose an elective schedule pursuing either clinical or research activities consistent with his/her future career plans. The experience may involve electives in Pain Management, Neuro-Immunology, Neuro-Oncology, Stroke/Neurovascular, Clinical Movement Disorders, DBS Movement Disorders, Neuromuscular Disease, Clinical Neurophysiology/Epilepsy, Neurorehabiliation, Neuropathology, Neuro-Oncology, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Neuro-Otology and Sleep Disorders.
