Family Medicine Residency History
The Family Medicine Residency Training Program was established in 1975 by Dr. Joseph White, then Director of Medical Education. The purpose was to train men and women in the art and science of Family Medicine. As the program is now in it's 33st year, with over162 graduates, it continues the tradition of training fine family physicians.
Throughout this time, our residents have delivered capable, competent care to a diverse patient population in a values-based organization. We are proud of our success in training family physicians who can and have flourished in many practice settings. Even though the program has grown through the years, and the medical landscape has undergone dramatic change, the vision put forth by Dr. White remains central to our mission.
About the Program
St. Joseph's Family Medicine Residency Program is a fully ACGME-accredited 8-8-8 training program. In addition to training family medicine residents, the program also supports on a part-time basis, several ob-gyn residents who are completing a primary care continuity experience as part of the Phoenix Integrated Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology Program (PIROG).
Medical students are also trained out of our Family Medicine Center, and in inpatient service at the clerkship and sub-internship levels. As a result of the diversity of our training and quality resources, the program is highly sought after by medical students wishing to enhance their education.
The program is also affiliated with the Sun Health - St. Joseph's Geriatric Fellowship Program, a fully ACGME-accredited fellowship and the ASU Sports Medicine Fellowship. Geriatric and Sports Medicine Fellows also spend time in the residency. The many close collaborative relationships that have developed over the years between this residency and other training programs on this campus, serve to enhance a resident's experience in such areas as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, emergency medicine and ob-gyn. It comes as no surprise that these areas are the strength of this program, and have given it a national reputation for the depth of training it offers.
Whether your choice of practice will be in an urban, suburban or rural setting, you will not find a program that prepares you better to move in to any practice setting.
