PGY 1 Pharmacy Residency Program


The intense twelve-month program has been designed to provide systematic training to achieve professional competence in the delivery of patient care in a diverse patient population and in practice management.

Pharmacists successfully completing the Postgraduate (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (SJHMC) in Phoenix, Arizona will:

  1. Exercise skill and proficiency in educating other health-care professionals, patients, and the community on medication use and disease management.
  2. Demonstrate maturity, professionalism and responsibility for managing one’s professional practice.
  3. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of current and future pharmacy practice.
  4. Competently provide direct patient care in multiple environments.
  5. Function effectively as a member of a health care team.

Residency Requirements

Applicants must have a B.S. in pharmacy or PharmD. degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy. The applicant must also be a licensed pharmacist or eligible for licensure in the state of Arizona.

The Department of Pharmacy

The Department of Pharmacy provides 24-hour services, supported by over 100 fulltime pharmacy personnel. An automated dispensing system is utilized throughout the hospital. Decentralized pharmacy staff are located in pediatrics, Barrow Neurological Institute, the Emergency Department, Women’s Care, and five intensive care units. Clinical pharmacy services include pharmacokinetics, anticoagulation, committee participation, medication use evaluations, clinical pathway/medication guideline development, formulary management, staff development and teaching rounds. Two outpatient pharmacies support Child Rehabilitation Services and the indigent patient population.

The following must be received prior to an on-site interview:

  1. Official transcripts of all pharmacy education
  2. Three letters of recommendation
