About the Family Medicine Center

Our residency provides care to individuals and families in Family Medicine Center. The Peppertree Building, which houses our residency, is located on the hospital campus just a short walk from the main hospital building. The Family Medicine Center encompasses over 9000 sq. ft. and includes 22 general exam rooms and 2 procedure rooms. The center also contains faculty and residents' offices, a library and computer room, a conference room and three nursing stations. The Center's close proximity to the hospital allows easy access to hospitalized patients, lab facilities, radiology, and physical therapy.

Consultant's offices in nearly all subspecialties are also located in nearby medical office buildings adjacent to the hospital. Our location near the hospital and consultants' offices enhances educational opportunities for our residents and assists them in providing high quality care for our patients.

The Peppertree Family Medicine Center has approximately 24,000 patient visits annually. The patient population is diverse. Approximately 50-60% of patients are Caucasian, 25-30% are Hispanic, 6-8% are Native American and 1-2% are African American. Residents care for on average 10 obstetrical continuity patients in their 2nd and 3rd years and are supervised and supported by their Family Medicine and Obstetrical Faculty.

The Family Medicine Center is designed to provide residents with a realistic continuity care experience. Residents build large patient panels and see patients of all ages. Patients that present to the Center, challenge residents with a wide range of diagnoses. Preventive and wellness care is also provided through continuity panels. The diversity of patients provides residents with a strong, comprehensive office setting experience.

The faculty participate in major health plans in the metropolitan area and residents have the opportunity to practice within several different managed care models. This opportunity to learn about "survival" in a managed care market is fast becoming a critical skill for our residents to take with them into private practice.

A wide variety of procedures are taught in the Family Practice Center including:

  • Endometrial Biopsy
  • Colposcopy with Biopsy
  • Cryotherapy
  • Spirometry
  • Tympanometry
  • Office Dermatologic Surgical Procedures
  • OB Ultrasound
  • Joint Injections/Aspiration
  • Wound Care
  • Incision and Drainage of Abscesses
