Curriculum & Conferences

The Radiology Residency curriculum is structured to give the resident a comprehensive and solid foundation in General Diagnostic Radiology, yet is flexible enough to allow him/her to add additional areas of focus in the curriculum. This allows residents to satisfy other areas of additional interest (e.g., intended fellowship study), or focus on individual areas of interest.

The first year residents gain a basic knowledge of Emergency Radiology to prepare for the upcoming call. Rotations in abdomen, chest, musculoskeletal, pediatrics, ultrasound, neuroradiology CT, nuclear medicine and GI/GU fluoroscopy are emphasized. As residents become more proficient in these basic areas, the scope is widened to include such areas as mammography, neuroradiology & musculoskeletal MRI and angiography/interventional radiology.

Teaching/Conferences

A majority of the teaching is done individually by faculty at the various reading areas. Numerous resource materials (books, journals, computers) are available in, or immediately adjacent to most reading areas for consultation by residents and faculty. Residents may attend meetings for which they have had papers or presentations accepted with paid time off, airfare, and accommodations provided by the program. Residents are required to participate in one research project over the course of the residency program. Faculty are available to aid in publishing articles and residents may participate in one of several ongoing research projects with the General Radiology or Barrow Neuroradiology faculty.

  • Daily Noon Conferences - Didactic Lecture or Interesting Cases.
  • Monthly Conferences - Journal Club, Visiting Professor etc. In addition, residents are assigned to interpret the imaging portions of various other hospital conferences such as Pediatrics, Tumor Board, Trauma M&M, Internal Medicine and Thoracic Oncology. A course is given by Mayo and Barrow Neurological Institute physicists prior to taking the physics exam.
  • Armed Forces Institute of Pathology - third or fourth year residents attend this national conference in Washington, DC. Travel, lodging and tuition are covered in full.
  • Board Review Conferences - All residents may attend a review course each year and two review courses available to senior radiology residents preparing for oral boards.
