St. Joseph’s Family Medicine Residency Program is a diverse, unique and comprehensive three year post-graduate learning experience that prepares residents to provide complete, competent and compassionate care in any practice setting. This fully accredited program with eight PGY-1 positions available each year was established in 1974 and is located in central Phoenix on St. Joseph’s campus, the largest and most comprehensive hospital in Arizona.
Care to a Diverse Population
Our Family Medicine Center offers many unique and special programs to provide medical care for our diverse patient population:
- Residents provide care to a large population of Hispanics and refugees from all over the world, as well as special populations providing maternity care to the Somalians and Burmese.
- Special group visits are done for Diabetics in both English and Spanish. Residents have the opportunity to provide these visits with an attending and clinical pharmacist.
- Residents participate in both the Geriatric and Sports Medicine clinics provided twice a month.
- We operate a school based clinic at Crockett Elementary School and residents have the opportunity to rotate at this clinic during their Community Medicine Rotation.
- Residents rotate at the Homeless Clinic, an off campus location.
- Residents provide care at the Procedure and Coumadin Clinics at the Family Medicine Center.
Mentoring and Teaching
St. Joseph’s Family Medicine Residency Program is affiliated with the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Creighton University College of Medicine for which we provide clerkship sites for third and fourth year medical students. Residents have the opportunity to participate in teaching these students and in serving as role models.
Residents are Active Participants
Family medicine residents play an active role in the operations of the program, which includes the academic affairs committee, social committee, recruitment, and selection of applicants to our program. Each year the residents choose two Chief Residents who participate in faculty meetings to enhance communication between faculty and residents and to involve the residents in the day-to-day operations of the residency program.
Emphasis on Teaching
The philosophy of our faculty and residency program is one of teaching and nurturing. The first month of internship in July is completely devoted to orientation, teaching, procedure workshops, building relationships and getting acquainted with faculty, staff and other residents.
Our faculty is committed to the education of residents and preparing them for real world practice. The faculty is diverse and each member has their own area of interest or expertise. Residents will not only learn from faculty but will also benefit from community family physicians in private practice. The inpatient rotation is a resident run service with family physician faculty supervision. The service provides care to patients from both the residency program and community family physicians, which enhances the inpatient learning experience.
Thursday afternoons are devoted to teaching. Interactive presentations on a wide variety of topics from physical exam skills to practice management are presented at this time. Guest speakers from the community and within the hospital present topics that are specific to their specialties.
Procedure workshops are also given through out the year and include basic and advanced suturing, wound repair, OB ultrasound, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, slit lamp, splinting, casting and joint injections.
