Susana Martinez-Conde, Ph.D., director of the Laboratory of Visual Neuroscience, and Stephen Macknik, Ph.D., director of the Laboratory of Behavioral Neurophysiology at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, are featured on the cover of the August issue of Scientific American for their research on fixational eye movements. The pair was also featured in a recent issue of the Wall Street Journal.

Stephen Macknik, Ph.D., director of Laboratory and Behavioral Neurophysiology at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, recently received a Competitive Advantage Award worth $120,000 from the Science Foundation of Arizona.

The Arizona Children's Justice Task Force named Kathy Coffman, M.D., the 2007 Outstanding Child Abuse Medical Professional. Dr. Coffman, medical director of the Child Abuse Assessment Center at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, has been a child abuse medical professional for 16 years. She was recognized for her commitment to multi-disciplinary investigations that ensure effective responses to reports of child abuse or neglect.

After five years of fundraising, St. Joseph's Foundation has secured $300,000 to purchase a brand-new, custom-built Maternity Outreach Mobile (MOMobile). Donations for the unit include $100,000 from Steve and Shelby Butterfield, a $50,000 grant from the BHHS Legacy Foundation and a $150,000 grant from The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) has granted a three-year approval with commendation to the Comprehensive Cancer Center at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. St. Joseph's received CoC approval for its commendable level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the hospital's cancer program.

The Heart & Lung Institute (HLI) at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center recently performed the Valley's first lung transplant.

Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center recently performed its 100th hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) surgery. HH is a rare benign brain tumor that causes gelastic seizures in infancy. Without treatment the tumor can cause severe seizures, damage to the brain and lead to progressive cognitive impairment, extreme rage and/or precocious puberty as children age.

The luck of the Irish may have landed Jean Mason, 51, of Dublin, Ireland in the right place at the right time. Last month, Jean was unexpectantly diagnosed with a brain aneurysm just hours after her brother, Ger Doherty, 39, underwent surgery for treatment of the same condition at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.

The Children's Health Center (CHC) and Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center have research underway that may offer hope for children with seizures that cannot be controlled by current treatments.

Children's Rehabilitative Services (CRS) at St. Joseph's Children's Health Center is making it possible for Harold Rekate, M.D. and director of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Program at Barrow Neurological Institute, to examine patients at a distance. Dr. Rekate is examining 25 pediatric neurosurgical patients in Yuma through Telemedicine, a technology that consists of a variety of video-conferencing equipment to make a synchronous medical examination possible.

A new clinic designed to offer specialized care to children who have recently been diagnosed with new-onset seizures recently opened at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. The New-onset Seizure Clinic, which opened to patients in January, ensures that patients receive appropriate testing and diagnosis of the developing seizures.

The Cameron T. Invitational Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 7 at the Queen Valley Golf Course. The invitational will kick-off with an open house hosted by the Haselhorst and Ehlebracht families of Queen Valley and Superstition Paint Horses. Proceeds will benefit the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.

The web-based service, titled The Parent Review, will provide a wealth of information about prenatal care, early childhood development and parenting. The Parent Review is available in English and Spanish to everyone who logs onto St. Joseph's website (www.stjosephs-phx.org) or the review page (www.stjosephs-phx.org/parents).
